Update: After the recording of the episode, the following was posted on Reddit:
In the original script for this episode, it was explained that Drago and Gobber were in jail, awaiting their trial for their lives. This was changed to them being in a holding cell. Toei Studios was made aware of this change, and while the credits for this episode still show the original jail story line, the blu-ray version of the episode has changed the story line to their being in the holding cell. The language used by the lawyers is also different, so it seems they were aware of the change.
(Original post): Perhaps the most shocking and heart-wrenching episode of the first season is not so much the ending as the beginning. As we all know by now, this is the first episode to feature a bromance between Hiccup and Toothless. While it would be easy to write it off as a couple of teenagers trying to figure out their place in the world, they have both earned their place in the pack.
With that in mind, it's clear that the ending doesn't really have a happy ending, since it's Hiccup and Toothless who are returning to Berk and leaving their other friends behind. Not only that, but there are rumors of imminent war and an attack on an outpost that Hiccup's father was in charge of. There are also rumors that the attack was carried out by Gobber's father, Drago.
To get more in-depth on these issues, the opinions of fans and creators were taken in the live-chat as part of a special episode of Dragon Talk.
As we know, it's incredibly hard to tell what's real and what's not, but with the live-chat, they were able to get some rather interesting statements from both fans and the creators. For example, when the topic was asked about Gobber's father, Gisli explained that it's possible that he was framed by Drago and that he actually was framed, and that they weren't really his parents.
It was also brought up that Toothless is the last of his kind, and that Gisli is already planning to mate with
